Controls Project Engineer

Job Summary

Lead the design, development, and implementation of advanced automated control systems in a food manufacturing environment. This role requires experience managing control system projects, ensuring compliance with USDA and FDA regulations, and mentoring automation technicians. Responsibilities include optimizing control systems, developing PLC programming, and overseeing integration with HVAC and refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement automated control systems for food processing equipment, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Develop control logic, programming, and configurations to meet operational and safety standards.
• Create and review detailed electrical schematics and control panel layouts.
• Manage control system projects from design to commissioning, ensuring timelines and budgets are met.
• Oversee vendors and lead maintenance automation/controls technicians.
• Integrate control systems with manufacturing equipment, robotics, sensors, and actuators.
• Develop and optimize PLC programs using advanced programming techniques.
• Oversee system testing, installation, and commissioning, ensuring reliability and food safety compliance.
• Ensure regulatory compliance, documentation, and adherence to sanitary design principles.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system efficiency and reduce downtime.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in controls engineering within a food manufacturing environment.
• Proficiency in PLC programming (ladder logic, structured text, function block diagrams, and sequential function charts).
• Experience with Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, ABB, and Keyence PLC controllers.
• Knowledge of USDA and FDA regulations related to food safety and sanitary design.
• Strong project management skills with experience leading teams and mentoring technicians.
• Familiarity with communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex control systems and implement process improvements.
• Preferred: Experience with HVAC and refrigeration systems in food manufacturing.
• Preferred: Knowledge of SQF certification standards and industrial IoT technologies.

Salary

$106,000 - $170,000 annually, based on experience.
